What is functional fitness

Functional fitness is described as a classification of exercise that involves the training of muscles that operate in daily activity.

The most common movement patterns that occur within training are very much the foundations of functional fitness.

  1. Push
  2. Pull
  3. Squat
  4. Lunge
  5. Hinge
  6. Rotate/Twist

Examples of this in comparison to daily activity are:

Carrying shopping vs Farmers Walks

Getting in & out of a chair vs Squats

Bending over to pick something up Vs KB Swings, Deadlift

Functional training avoids the excessive use of restricted movement patterns. Without the use of fixed machines (Pec decks, Leg extension etc) your body is able to adapt better to the load its being put under. It’s all about moving optimally and comfortably.

This is not to say that machines are not good but with excessive use of some of them it allows for muscular imbalance and with stronger muscles pulling against weaker ones this can lead to injury.

With all types of training whether it is Bodybuilding, CrossFit, Zumba or Functional Fitness the most important factors to consider are is it right for me? and is it programmed well?
